Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
So lets take a closer look at the famous follow me car itself. From the outside it definitely stands out with its black and yellow checkered paint job. That‘s the primary reason, to stand out from all other ground vehicles. On the roof you have a set of antennas to receive data link messages and to be able to communicate on all airport frequencies. Then the large infamous „Follow me“ sign which the driver controls from his dashboard and another feature you‘ll see in minute. Some follow me cars have extra bright lights mounted on their roof or bonnet to light up the taxiway or runway during night time operation.
Inside the car, the dashboard with the associated switches. A traffic screen to send and receive messages from dispatch and the mentioned radio to listen to given clearances. Besides standard safety equipment like a fire extinguisher, first aid kit etc. the car comes with an extra set of wheel chocks and these handheld wands, but more about in a minute.
But the primary purpose for what the Follow-Me car is best known for is of course, hence the name „Follow me“. So guiding airplanes around the apron and the taxiways, to or from active runways. If a Follow-Me car is requested upon landing, the driver, who is called a marshaller, will be notified by one of the air traffic controllers in the tower, either on a separate radio frequency or via data link messaging to his monitor. Once he receives and confirms the order, he positions his car where the arriving cockpit crew can see it best once they exit the runway. Then monitors the active ground frequency and waits for you to receive your taxi clearance. Once you’ve read back your clearance only then will the driver turn on his beacon and the “Follow me” sign and expects you to keep up with him and match his speed. Some of the of Follow me signs have arrows which will flash up once the driver uses his indicator, signaling the pilot that a turn can be expected and second now. Some also have a trigger in the handbrake, switching the follow me instructions to Stop!
But see more in the video ...

Really loving your videos, thank you!....

    2. David M

Stuttgart Airport. I've been there many times. Very familiar with it. Nice to see them getting (and giving) some love!

    3. RickySTT

Lamborghini: the follow me car that consumes fuel as fast as the aircraft.

      1. Tom Corwine

        lol

    4. Max S.

Well a Huracan is nearly identical to the R8, just a different generation to the one shown.

    5. Max S.

Do they really still paint them? I thought it was all wraps by now.

    6. Max S.

My tenth (or around there) birthday we did a "behind the scenes" tour at our local airport (Hamburg, Germany, fairly small). The guide said "and those are the follow me cars. Usually they drive far enough ahead for the pilot to see them. We use the Busses (VW T4 at the time), because their size gives some resonance for a loud crunch when the plane wheel hits us, so the pilots know to back off a bit."

    7. bernard bouzon

For your information the huracan is the Current follow me car in Bologna.

    8. bernard bouzon

Thanks for the video. I took a flight from Vienna to Munich last year and the plane was guided by a follow me car due to low visibilty after landing.

    9. bernard bouzon

      I'd say Schipol (AMS)

    10. Robbie Kenna

I'm a pilot based in Poland flying the 737-800 and every airport I operate in (Katowice, Krakow, Gdansk, Warsaw Modlin, Lodz, Wroclaw, Rzeszow and Poznan) have the follow me service mandatory for all arriving aircraft and some of the airports have the service mandatory for departing aircraft too e.g. Krakow and Rzeszow

    11. Tom Tom

Reminds me of the wonderful Richard Scarry books and drawings

    12. Mikael Sojka

Your audio is really funky dude. 😋😂

    15. puellanivis

Huh… I imagine with the massive amounts of lift that the U2 can generate (necessary to fly so high up), that it could absolutely land at the speed a fast car can get up to.

    16. juliansark

I swear instead of "U2" I heard: "Within that car is another IRvision pilot."

    17. Dale Allan

      You’re the best one

    18. Truth Witness

Fly by the Bermuda Triangle there should be a follow me airplane

    21. Rolf Helder

Where to take off? Follow the lamborghini at speed, pull back the stick and raise your landing gear. Goodbeye!

    22. Bobo The mighty

Work on the audio quality plz

    28. kreiseltower

Thank you for this video! @Captain Joe, Since you're based in Luxemburg, you've probably visited Saarbrücken? Have you been at the airport there (probably not with the 747 ;-) )? Funny thing is... as often as I've been at EDDR, there was always the follow me car. And the funny part about this is.. the airport has one runway (for jets), one taxi way and like two apron parking stands. Still always the follow me car 😂😂😂 I find that very hilarious because at big airports like EDDF I barely see a follow me car....

    29. Tomush

Goose clip possible most funniest 😂

    30. Blava

The U2 is still in service.

    31. Khiladi 340

I have one question for those who are seeing this video.... What are the two types of vehicles whose weight has been focused a lot??

    32. John Siders

I would think it would be really embarrassing to pull up to the wrong gate !!!

    33. Rooster Cogburn

How did we maneuver the hallways of junior high/high school much less college campuses...

    34. ChloeLouiseeB

Never experienced a follow me car, at our field it’s use the only inbound taxiway, pick some empty grass in front of the hangar, try to avoid the bat shit crazy helis that will try to land on you for no apparent reason, and leave it there 🤣

    35. WhiteWulfe

I'd never heard of or seen such vehicles, however the instant it was described it kind of had that typical "oh, that just makes sense then" that a lot of aspects of aviation have. I have found myself behind standard airport vehicles in the past though - as the coffee delivery guy! First time on a taxiway in a Ford Transit is an interesting experience!

    36. Marcin W

I used to work as a Marshaller. I remember my first night shift with low visibility. I was terryfied, i couldn't see what was in front of me, it was like 50m visibility. Great that you mention what marshaller is doing on the airport. You should decode all marshaller signs, because most of the GA pilots don't know what we want them to do.

    37. Relaxing White Noise Studio

The best pilot in the world 😘

    38. AviationPilot99

😂 i love how the thumbnail has a lamborgini as the follow me car

    44. mhs vz

cuz pilots are dumb and don't know where to go otherwise?

    46. Chris Kästner

      DUS- Düsseldorf

    47. Elli P

'FOLLOW ME'? Hmm. I remember the 'Fireflash' episode of the Gerry Anderson TV series 'Thunderbirds' where three of the ground vehicles displayed 'LAND ON ME' signs...

    48. J.D.V films

      lamborGHIni not lamborgini ahah

    49. Alain Archambault

I didn't think the airports were still that busy.

    50. fan fan

      it is Heathrow airport

    51. Emily

I've provided a follow me service a few times. I was an airport reporting officer and works safety officer for a small regional airport (YWSL). We were under going mager upgrades and some taxiways were closed. While the nearby military base provided air traffic control for the area, my airport has no tower and as such there is no ground control. Enter the pilots who got a little lost and my plain white utility vehicle with only amber beacon lights and a radio to guide them to their parking. Not a service normally operated at such a small airport, but necessary at the time due to contruction works which I was supervising.

    52. Malcolm Anon

Good video on an under appreciated part of the airport services - maybe one next for your humble ground crew / turnaround guys, just saying like :) Also nice to your former home supporting your content, here's a shout out to SGT

    53. Zetanist

Is that a JFK airport? The tower looks similar.

    54. Marco DM

      it's LAMBORG-INI not LAMBORJINI 🤦‍♂️

    55. Stupid Comment Of The Week

Morning Joe, brilliant video as always! At our airport we also use follow me cars on particular taxiways that don't have any taxiway lighting. If we haven't got taxiway edge and centerline lights during hours of official darkness or LVP's, a follow me will be mandatory to comply with the aerodrome license / manual and regulatory regulations.

    56. Markus Neef

Grüße aus Stuttgart wusste gar nicht das du von hier kommst haha 😂

    57. Elliot Taggart

Captain Joe, you’re the best!!!! From Chicago O’Hare, and Executive Tower. I agree that we need more follow me cars in Chicago! How do we get that in the books? Our winters and outdoor roads & rough and dangerous (Most of the time) You would think that we have a decent amount of emergency vehicles 8-0

    58. zog zog

"Yellow Orange bright colours"?? really I may a bit colour-blind but I see yellow and black.

    59. femanvate

If I had that Lamborghini Tower 0800: please inspect runway Me 0804: completed Tower: what so fast? Me: yes sir inspected it twice

    60. Liz Hedlund

Me: sees airport Me: is that MBS ? Also Me: no why would it be no one knows about it

    61. canadarocks8b

Seems like million dollar planes should have a Tom Tom or Garmin and the ground control could set up your route and stop areas

    62. Beachtime

What airliner do you work for?

    63. Jochen Schueller

Kind of ironic that pilots are able to fly all around the world at almost the speed of sound, being responsible for the safety of hundreds of passengers and hundreds of tons of metal which costs millions of dollars to replace and are trained to handle all kinds of unexpected failures that may ouccur somewhere over the pacific ocean, but after a successful manual crosswind landing the most challenging part of the flight exceeds their capabilities and cannot be completed without assistance: The apron. Two pilots are unable to read a map and follow yellow lines and signs, while being guided via radio to their destination. So many turns, left - and right, without prior warning by a flashing arrow sign in front of them? no way!

    64. Michele Orbolato

Great video, unbelievably cold there ... eh!

    65. Dan Nash

I wonder if the local taxpayers know they paid for a $500,000 Lamborghini when a $20,000 Fiat 500 would do the job just as well. If that happened in my area, the local airport commissioners would be kicked out of office.

    66. toolchesst

My father used to fly gliders. The tugs they used to retrieve gliders that had landed all had a follow me sign on the back. Glider pilot humor.

    67. Versatile Life

Munich, i can see the control tower and that big tent thing where the entrance is

    68. Michael Klump

uh i have never seen this

    69. Muhammed Omar

9:09 lol Ryanair The king of back breaking landings

    70. nettlesoup

I'm very happy to hear that electric vehicles are being used more these days. I guess in Germany it will more likely be a VW or Audi rather than Tesla for the follow me. But it will be cool to see any of these next time I fly!

    71. Dennis Adams

      You are cool

    72. David Saucedo

You never rlly see these in the states

    73. Sérgio Agostinho
