Why not a simple exhaust gas test of the coolant ? Probably someone has asked this already but.....That is a beautiful but really overly complicated machine. Only the Germans could engineer something so over engineered but lord help you when the shit hits the fan.

    2. Hellbent706

I think I still would have fixed it if I had decided to take on the project to begin with. Unwarp it as best as possible at machine shop. Shave the the rest as least as possible. Then use a slightly thicker head gasket. He was guessing about the block being warped sight unseen. He was also guessing about the computer wouldn't be able compensate enough. That may be true but that's what Turner shops are for. They can get more out of the computer than the factory program. Otherwise, dont invest in a project if you didn't foresee worst case scenario and is not able to see it through. All that guesswork is good but I can see a solution where the car can be repaired without the full expense of replacing the engine. I've seen too many repair people guess wrong but they swore they were right at first. You need to verify and you need to think outside the box. Or you should have never took on the project in the first place. If the engine is unfixable My plan "B" would be to buy a wrecked, completely trashed or even a burned up i8 that still has a good head and block. Then do a repair with those used parts or complete used engine swap. That would be cheaper than a LS swap and it would be a much easier swap since the old engine is already out and the new one is a direct bolt it.

    3. Steve Jackson

That's a Ferrocerium rod. It's the same thing in bic lighters, and the knife is a Mora and you can get them for 40$ .

    4. Nefarious Rogue

Swee Jesus you dont want to slide hammer those injectors out. They have a thin brass tube that can break under force.

    5. Worsin

I could have sworn the first video someone told you that you needed a new engine. Seems he was the smart one in the bunch.

    6. Tony Stone

because of personal experience with a old Volvo I thought it was a blown head gasket right off Bubbling in reservoir

    7. jobanski

I occasionally come back to this video to only watch the last minute ending.

    8. ray h.

So embarrassed to steal this guys work ain't gonna stop him tho ! lol

    9. Tupu Humuhumunukunukuapua'a

Bruh, that image of Rich... Wow, uhm care to explain? LMAO

    10. Raymond FERRETTI

BMW makes junk !!! There's no excuse for .005" doing that much damage !!!

    11. CalgarGTX

I wonder if the fact that it is a hybrid means that the EV part is helping the ICE run so even with a leak it still sounds kinda normal

    12. Citizen Troll

I never, ever buy a used car. Never have. Why buy somebody else’s headaches? Nope won’t do it.

    13. Grog#wootwoot26

The shovel is what we in the military call an E tool.

    14. Cougracer67

What is this-Home Shopping Network or something? Boo! Hiss!

    15. Highway rambler

Did you do a compression test? A bleed down test? Did I miss that?

    16. Highway rambler

What happened after you replaced the radiator? Where is that episode?

    17. Mike W

I agree shave the head and the block if needed and thick copper gasket

    18. Dr. Robert Branch

Can you provide a link to the tester you used to check for exhaust leaking into the coolant?

    19. TheKrabjcilveks

      Dealership was actually right

    20. Kase Williams

Problem is that bmw produced such a shitty super car😂😂40k on the used market and that shitty sounding 3 cylinder just ain’t worth it

    21. NACHAL CHAIM

What a fool. Before trashing the car, he should have put it back together without resurfacing, just a new head gasket and bolts and then tried Blue Devil.

    22. Kravok

I drove my civic for years with a blown head gasket.

    23. Mark Darlington

Sam ass crack at 2mins 52secs. Made me laugh. Interesting to see how this turns out, keep up the good work Sam.

    24. heldgop

isnt that what oversized head gaskets are made for?

    25. Yep Its Me

Sell me the car ;) I would love to do a K Swap

    26. Brandon Mitchell

Why they gotta make fun of Doug demouro 😂

    27. Kim Scala

Couldn't you have come to the same conclusion by just doing a block test? A block test kit and fluid is $30 at NAPA. This seemed like a lot of work for the same conclusion.

    28. awilson2525

My initial diagnosis was correct 5 minutes into the first video. I do not understand why any mechanics did not recognize this right away. All the signs were there. BMWs suck.

    29. splavin90

I guarantee you I could get that thing sealed up with some 2x4’s and sand paper resurfacing

    30. Keith Summers

You could have an aluminum specialist add a layer to both the head and block and then have the machine shop bring the newly deposited aluminum down to the correct specification? It's not an easy fix but it's better than risking all on a thicker head gasket which is going to not match the original design.

    31. PARA Trooper

My neighbor bought a dead XJ - replaced the V12 Jag engine with an American V8 and now his wife is running around town with her beautiful looking and running new for her Jaguar. Why not put a comparable sized lawn mower engine in this pig.

    32. BobbyDuke

      or alot

    33. BobbyDuke

could oine of the owners have poped the cap on the hot coolant line then drove and overheated it to blow the head gasket a little

    34. BobbyDuke

you could have done a leak down on it and found where the problem was if you needed to know what cylinder was leaking but it is obvious it was the front cyl.

    35. D Wall

So BMW can't design castings that don't warp!

    36. Roman Aldaine

BMWs are so-so strange. When I had my Mini Cooper S it had issues with coolant leaving the system on-random, but it has never overheated on me, ever, even when the overflow tank was low on coolant. And here you have an I8 with no coolant issues that can't drive 4 miles.

    37. Stjerneskudd

Level the head and block, then use a thicker head gasket.

    38. Panda Digital Love

30k discount to learn something. 20k for new engine. Or hell convert it to EV.

    39. Tom H

I would use that head gasket tester on any used, especially auction car I looked at. Great videos!!!

    40. sammi khan

i am surprised that this car with low mileage has a blown head gasket. you pay so much you would expect quality parts.

    41. csx4402

      i dig the mac box

    42. The Guy

The best cars are the ones you do not have to work on!

    43. Danger Bear

If the block can be salvaged Find someone that can weld some material to the head and machine it

    44. Calvin Hay

One of the reasons why I would never owned another BMW.

      1. Humus Humus

Got a rav4 with a blown head gasket only 30 000 miles. Pro; car cheap to replace, usually better quality, although not as good as portrayed on IRvision. But its trash to drive, like most Toyotas. Quality piece of shit is the best description :)

      2. shapesinaframe

Or any luxury car. Had an Audi, wonderful car to drive, terrible car to own - had to completely remove the engine to replace a failed ECU in the transmission, and in the process they “discovered” a broken engine mount 💸💸💸 Never again.

    45. Schmo Burger

Im just here for for the twin L7's pumping reggae out of the Smart.

    46. Eric Wes

Ha ha, you'll never start a fire with that "stick" if that's how you use it. Hint: There's another part that needs to be used first.

    49. Alouicious Jackson

Do not use head gasket sealant! It is a temporary repair at best. you are then left with a mess inside your cooling system.

    50. The Johnny O Show

my daughter bought a 2005 honda civic, it ran perfectly but kept overheating at weird random times, evertime we thought we had it fixed a few weeks later it would overheat again, we pretty much went through all the same kind of crap as you (well except it was a honda civic so of course, not exactly the same, but you know what I mean) anyway it turned out it was a blown head gasket, and the head was warped but fixable. so after 6 months of fighting the issue, it's now fixed, but the weird thing was, other than overheating from time to time it ran perfectly

    51. YouTube r naz1s Censored by the gestapo

A Cuban could fix it with a soda can a roll of duct tape....

    52. YouTube r naz1s Censored by the gestapo

      What the fuck is normalish????

    53. Dean Derkson

plane the head, plane the block, get a solid copper gasket made in the right thickness

    54. Yuk-erk McKirk

Why is it called an i8 when it only has a 6cyl motor? And are the minis only 3cyl, i didn't know that either, i thought they were 4cyl.

    55. John PM

"Can we fix it?" "No, it's fucked!"

    56. humandxp

once in poland my boss asked to stay overtime, he will buy pizza, ok we can help, then when whole ass fucked lazy whores office eat their pizza he said we can go and eat slice. i felt like somone spit in my face, i ask i work already 2h overtime for fucked slice? that moment i quit this shit fucked job. but i still love pizza

    57. John Hermanson

Exhaust gasses are CO not CO2, or people would not die from it. Am I right or am I missing something?

    58. Kevin Overbeck

There is a reason why garages wont let customers into the bays.....they mess with the mechanics mojo. And, its just annoying to have someone looking over your shoulder the whole time.

    59. David Star

Just bend the head back in a press.

    60. stuart coyne

That knife is a bushcraft/utility knife as I recognise the the maker and the knife (Mora is very famous in the bushcraft world)I think Mora do make a filleting knife but that’s a scandy grind and is really made to carve wood but not for filleting as it’s to thick. Just thought I’d point it out since I’m a knife maker but also love cars, bikes, ATVs, go karts or anything with an engine lol. Hope you get your car fixed though as it’s a really cool car.

    61. Bruno Miramont

Go an other shop ...surface this head. Check thé block. If its iron should be fine

    62. Sukhjinder Singh

    65. Marshal Losàntos

I’m glad for channels like this. It gives me hope that when I own my bmw there are competent mechanics out there.🙌

    66. Chaos Corner

For people asking how it was running fine, I've had cars run for thousands of miles with leaky head gaskets with very little in the way of adverse effects. Edit: OK, having watched the video, they weren't in as bad a condition as that.

    67. Tim Miller

      BMW means bring my wallet

    69. grumpybill

Put a gasket in it and sell.

    70. Doktor Jeep

Somebody used that car for racing

    71. Tom Hall

Did he say 0.005in was too bent? I've chopped 0.030 off heads before and the car ran fine, id wanna check the block face for flatness before proceeding though, blocks can be refaced too but 0.005 is about the maximum you'd wanna go before having to skim the pistons down too.

    72. karakuri002

make a table out of it

    73. Imran Shaikh

      2:09 is that a Supra

    74. BunzeeBear

Time to phone the auto salvage yards(aka junk yards) to ask for that kind of car with a motor. They are interconnected to other yards across the country. But I would take the block in to a better machine shop who would know THEY HAVE TO CHECK THE BLOCK FOR FLATNESS. (they don't guess in an offhand way). Maybe they had "stretch bolts" that were reused.(You can't do that) An engine machine shop would know that stuff. Many people think they can reuse HG when they can't so maybe this has not been torqued properly? as it has been in a shop more than once. Put in an old school V8

    75. Pete Kowalsky

The Drama! I don't even own any European cars and I'm here watchin this LMAO!

    76. 44 Hawk

Some BMWs actually require a 1500 mile retorque schedule For the head bolts. Is it possible that this was necessary on this engine yet was not done? Which tends to lead to premature head gasket issues. Check the block if you don't have a problem any more than two thousanth of an inch you should be good. And I'm not sure whether or not they make any more than one type of head gasket. But on almost every application I have ever seen you can buy thicker head gaskets to make up for having ground the head.

    81. Devils Emissary

Those look like the L7s in the trunk. I had 2 tens and they banged hard

    82. epoxeclipse

your shop cant add metal to the head? I got a machine shop that will add metal to the head and build it up before they flat deck it. Baller shop though I don't know if its a widely done fix.

    83. ty all

that bespoke box is crap. do your research and just buy the actual product you need/want.

    84. Gunther

"Its kind of dirty for 30k miles.." Me not knowing wtf I'm looking at: "dang that IS dirty for 30k miles"

    85. Richard Doty

I called it the whole first video I was like it’s a blown head gasket

      1. Richard Doty

The bubbling in the reservoir is a sign of Exhaust gas leaking through but I didn’t comet cuz I saw this

    86. Damien Gardner

Ugh, that bespokepost mob only ship to US and Canada... Would have been helpful if their site was upfront about that before they take all your details..

    87. F165

14:31 you can tell people who are not used to working on cars. They don’t hold the tools right.

    88. F165

I bought a block tester for my 2001 Deville with the Northstar engine. It ran hot because off a plug coolant filter.

    89. Ben Burg

Mill it use 2 head gaskets. What do you have to lose at this point

BIG MONEY WASTER, not gonna lie I wish I could waste money on a car like that.

    92. Richard Wallinger

i would fit wills rings and glue the head back on with 3m industrial epoxy Scotch weld 9323 A_B. Bake in a cardboard box on top of my workshop wood-stove and then 24 hours later install the engine and go for a 12 lap race around any racetrack .. Job Done .. don,t you guys know nothing ???. !980 Donnington GT championship winner using my alloy hillman imp modified one litre the above way . I used 3m epoxy on all of my engine rebuilds .

    93. Philip Payne

I used to have a BMW bike. I rode it over to France but it too came back in a box when the engine packed up 😂

    94. Rob A

I wonder how many times Steven has had that gold bracelet repaired. I'm a retired jeweller. Don't wear jewellery when working with your hands around anything mechanical. Guys like me don't make much on jump ring repairs.

    95. bsrcat1

I would have got resurfaced anyways. I would have been measured the tolerances and bought a garlock gasket for that thickness.

    96. SLYDIT

    100. Richard Baggaley

Who would have thought a BMW with an engine problem? Its as rare as a VAG with gearbox issues or a Mercedes rusting....There is a reason why the Germans dont agree with the fact their cars are the best.
